The Brisbane Pride Festival is here again and I suspect the notion of ‘community pride’ will mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
I would like to think that this month in particular could be a time for our community to really come together and celebrate our strengths.
The spirit in which Pride takes place is meant to be one of friendship, support, camaraderie and unity. Those who work tirelessly to ensure we have a fantastic month do it with this spirit.
So while a very small Pride collective of six and their team of volunteers give much of their time to us, perhaps this could be a time that we think about what having Pride really means.
The Brisbane lesbian community can often be a place of difference, isolation, segregation and intolerance. This represents shame to me, not pride.
We can all do our bit for our community pride without lifting a finger. Simply think about how you see, treat and give or not give to others.
Take the time to get to know people. If you see someone standing alone, invite them over. And if someone has nothing but nasty things to say about others, don’t join in.
Few travel in the world with true pride and honour, but if you meet someone who does, be more like them.
