Cairns

Birthday boys do Skinny Dips

Cairns’ identities Simon Smith and ‘Pencil’ (AKA Stuart) celebrated birthdays last month with a big party at Skinny Dips. Simon’s 40th and Pencil’s undisclosed was marked with entertainment by Miss Destiny and DJ Energie, and Simon’s sister from the Gold Coast will long be remembered in these parts as the “ultimate party girl”.

Cairns’ service changes

Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) in Cairns held a morning tea last month for the staff of the Cairns Needle Syringe Program (NSP). With QAHC now proudly promoting their new LGBT resource centre and the NSP having moved from the Sexual Health Service at the Cairns Base Hospital to ATODS in Shields Street some exchange of information was necessary. NSP coordinator Amanda Kvassay says that the service continues to provide the full range of injecting equipment and disposal containers free to people who choose to inject drugs. Wheel filters and sterile water are available for sale. With the same friendly staff, we are open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday at 31 Shields Street, Cairns. Cairns LGBT Resource Centre at 290 Draper Street operates from 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday.

Fraser Gays

The Fraser Gays BBQ's are a great opportunity to get to know people outside of the nightclub environment, to hang out without having to yell over the loud music and to bring kids along.

Just bring food, drinks, something to sit on, sunscreen, etc.

BBQ/Picnics are held on the first Saturday/Sunday each month and generally alternate between venues at Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Check the BBQ/Picnics page for dates of future events.

Local gay film seeks French translator

The makers of Queensland’s first independent gay feature film, Performance Anxiety, are planning on submitting the quirky romance to queer film festivals worldwide.

But first they need someone who can help translate the script into French.

“One challenge for translating the existing English subtitles into French is the small number of double entendres,” producer Colin J Pearce told Queensland Pride.

Describing the film’s synopsis, Pearce said: “Jeff and Peter live together, but their characters are worlds apart. Jeff is a messy, hippy musician, while Peter is a tidy, almost obsessive, office worker.

“As a couple, they struggle for connection. Their day leads them on unusual journeys with amusing consequences, drawing them towards a moment of truth.

“Peter is played by Luke Mitchell (who has been) likened to James Dean with his smouldering looks and delivery. Brisbane’s top drag queen, Wanda dParke plays the Landlord.”

Pearce said a copy of the DVD could be mailed to the translator to help put the script in perspective.

If you may be able to assist in the translation, call Colin on 3878 6303.

GLBT counselling

Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) and Relationships Australia (Spring Hill) are working in collaboration to provide a new outreach service providing relationship counselling for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people in Brisbane. Beginning on August 11, with available appointments from 8:30am to 3pm, the service will be available every Monday at the QAHC Brisbane office at 30 Helen Street, Newstead. The cost of the service will be $75 per hourly session, or $35 for concession card holders.

This is the first time a face-to-face counselling service has been regularly available to Brisbane's GLBT community. The service provides an opportunity for individuals, couples and families to receive confidential counselling on a broad range of issues impacting on their relationships, from a fully qualified counsellor from the GLBT community.

Relationships Australia Spring Hill is an inclusive service for all people and have been promoting their service to GLBT groups and services as well as at GLBT events. As QAHC has an initiative to provide and support counselling and mental health services to the GLBT community, the collaboration aims at being beneficial to all. Further information can be accessed by phoning Dave Wells at QAHC on 07 3017 1777, or to make an appointment contact relationships Australia on 1300 364 277.

It is envisaged that if this concept is successful that QAHC and Relationships Australia will view opportunities to mirror the success in other regions of Queensland where R.A offices and QAHC Community centres exist.
