Parishioners and supporters are rallying to save St Mary’s Catholic
Church in South Brisbane from being closed down following complaints
about the gay-friendly church from the Vatican. Supporters met on Monday, August 25 to discuss ways to save the church following a letter from the Archbishop of Brisbane, John Bathersby, who warned parish priest, Fr Kennedy, the church was in danger of “schism”. "The question for me," Bathersby wrote, "is not so much whether St Mary's should be closed down, but whether St Mary's will close itself down by practices that separate it from communion with the Roman Catholic Church." Bathersby raised a number of practices at St Mary’s that have sufficiently angered some conservative Catholics so as to spark complaints direct to The Vatican. The issues include the presence of a Buddhist statue, use of unorthodox liturgy and a “congregational” leadership style more democratic than authoritarian. “In reality St Mary’s South Brisbane has taken a Roman Catholic parish and established its own brand of religion,” Bathersby wrote. The church has previously angered conservatives in the church by welcoming gay couples and allowing the Brisbane Gay and Lesbian Choir to perform there in June 2003 as part of Brisbane Pride Festival celebrations. Bathersby opposed the performance and said it was “inappropriate”. However, gay Catholic activist and St Mary’s parishioner, Tony Robertson, told Queensland Pride supporters were rallying to save St Mary’s. “The response and support from across all social justice networks has been overwhelming,” Robertson said. “St Mary’s is a church which takes seriously its identity as a Catholic community and practices the teachings of the Catholic Church which call for homosexual persons be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” Robertson said. “Such acceptance calls for practical action which welcomes gay and lesbian people to the life and worship of the community. “Those who have concerns about our support for sexual minorities need to remember that the Catholic Church also teaches that every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. In this spirit the Church has opened its doors to the Brisbane Lesbian and Gay Pride Choir who use the Church for weekly rehearsals as well as supporting the musical and religious culture at St Mary’s,” he said. Robertson also noted that other Catholic Churches also welcome sexual minorities, including a northside church that includes the rainbow flag among its public decorations. “Gay and lesbian Catholics who prefer more traditional worship have always been a presence at the Cathedral of St Stephen where one of the beautiful stain glass windows is dedicated to a gay member of the famous Mayne Family of Brisbane,” he added. Robertson said the current status of St Mary’s as a Catholic Church had not changed and that the church building and parish house will continue to be a safe place for gay and lesbian people.

Peter Baird
written by Peter Baird , May 23, 2009 Right on Steveo. You won't get anyone marching in Queensland due to their non rebelious nature. Law reform is always left up to a handfull of people. If I or Peter Thatchell react to discrimination we are called 'S...t Stirers', or comments such as.. 'Why don't U leave us alone, we are quite happy the way we are'. Paul Martin writes comfortably from his desk about 'standing up for your rights', but U wouldn't find him chaining himself to the furniture at the Births and Deaths Office. I and my disabled client were terrorised in Public Housing recently by some migrant thugs who perceived that we were gay. We asked Paul for help but none was forthcoming. In fact everyone in the Gay community looked the other way. We were even ridiculed by a Gay Police Officer or advised to relocate. Good luck Paul and to your Text book theories. We must question these people who set themselves up as experts. report abuse

Homosexuals in the church
written by john lotterman , January 09, 2009 Even though it seems to be out of place to have a Buddhist statue in a Christian Church, it is also true that this Church exemplifies how gays and lesbians should be viewed. Not as sinners, but as children of God. And even when we want to call gay love a sin, join the club, sinners all men are. Precisely for that the Lord be came man. We really have to understand that the Holy Scriptures are not only fully Gods Word, but also written by humans, in their culture with their view in mind. Scripture teaches us the need of salvation, and is prescriptive in the command to love God and our fellow men. Homosexuality in the days of the Scripture writers was often connected with idolatry and fertility cults and therefore cannot be compared with two men or women in a loving relationship. Friendly greetings, John Lotterman, practizing Christian in an evangelical church. report abuse

Pig Pope's comments on homosexuals as environmentally detrimental people
written by steveo , December 25, 2008 The Catholic Church always has been a deplorable, despiccable, inhuman and deeply entrenched peadophile organisation.Go to Rome and find out first hand. If any gay catholic (how could anyone be in the first place?) still wants to be part of this crap crowd after the pope's latest remarks you must be bloody braindead or so weak that you can't help yourself. Where are the big protest marches????Where is a lawyer with guts to start a case against the pope.Where are the crowds running Pell's abode in? But you are all happily gay parading on the coming Mardi Gras... report abuse
