Sunshine Coast Pride Fair proves popular

Fair goers enjoy the day
Organisers of the inaugural Sunshine Coast Pride Fair say they were “overwhelmed” with the numbers who turned up at the October 19 celebrations.

Over 700 people attended the Fair at Millwell Road Community Centre at Maroochydore.

“Many were locals from around the Sunshine Coast, but we also had some come from Brisbane and interstate as well,” Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) spokesperson Katie Bishop told Queensland Pride

“We’re very happy with the response. We didn’t expect that sort of response from the community. There were 50 stalls, and could have easily had a bigger venue to cater for everyone.”

Bishop said the Fair would “most definitely” be held again in 2009.

“Everybody’s very eager. We’re already looking at larger venues so we can have more stalls and entertainment, and we’ve had lots of calls from people interested in having stalls next year.”

Despite being surprised by the turnout, Bishop said she believed the gay and lesbian community on the Sunshine Coast had been “crying out for something like this”.

“There’s a once a month dance party and little groups that meet, but there’s been nothing more substantial,” she said.

Fair goer Michael Elwood told Queensland Pride: “Everybody seemed very happy. It was a vibrant, colourful and a lot of fun”.
