Renegade priest to defy Rome
Written by Peter Hackney

Father Peter Kennedy, the renegade Brisbane priest sacked by the Roman Catholic Church this week, has vowed to defy The Vatican and continue to say mass.

Kennedy, who was sacked by Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, John Bathersby, over 'controversial' practices such as blessing same-sex unions and giving communion to GLBT people, says he'll hold his usual mass at St Mary's, South Brisbane this Sunday, despite threats from Bathersby to call police.

"I would say to all our people out there, come to [the] 9 o'clock mass and we will see what happens," he said.

"I guess we don't know how it's going to work. We don't want children scared. We don't want any sort of confrontation, so we will just have to wait for that day to see what happens."

Bathersby said he felt betrayed by the Archbishop of Brisbane for sacking him.

"I have a sense of betrayal by myself personally, but I'm really very concerned for the members of the community for whom this community is so important, and most of them will walk away," he said.
