Project to track hate crimes

A project to help track hate speech and crimes against Queensland gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) communities has received nearly $80,000 in funding from the State Government.

Griffith University’s Socio Legal Research Centre Adjunct Research Fellow and the project’s chief investigator Dr Alan Berman claimed Queensland was one of the most homophobic states.

“While sexual vilification laws exist to prevent homophobic hate crimes, enforcement has been a problem as it is difficult to identify crimes related to sexual prejudices,” Dr Berman said.

The Queensland Police Service does not record and collate information on hate crimes against LGBT people, despite the urging of activists for it to do so.
