| Nude still rude to some |

Nudity was conspicuous in its absence during the Brisbane leg of the World Naked Bike Ride at Wynnum on March 8 due to heavy police presence. The ride is held in cities all over the world to “protest against oil dependency and environmental abuse, and to promote social acceptance of naturism and sustainable living”. Almost two hours before the 4pm start, six police cars had already arrived at Glenora Park on the Wynnum North Esplanade. Though police in attendance maintained friendly contact with the assembled naturists, they said public nudity would not be tolerated. Consequently, none of the 10 protesters rode fully naked. One protester attempted to ride topless until a voice boomed from a police van: “Oi! Put your bra back on!” Organiser Dario Western told reporters he believed “family groups” had made complaints about the bike ride after pre-event exposure in the local newspaper. He said it was unlikely future nude rides would be promoted in advance.

written by Dario Western , March 29, 2008 Thank you for publishing this article. I think that when it comes to the crunch, most people in Brisbane do not find social or public nudity to be offensive as much as they find it more amusing - even if they don't choose to participate in it. I think that the police were incredibly over-strict with this year's one compared to last year. They don't seem to get the message that nudity at the WNBR is the individual's right, not their's to oppress otherwise. Nevertheless, the few participants enjoyed themselves a lot. I am planning another one, possibly on June 8, when the rest of the world will be doing it, but as yet I don't know what location I'll pick. If anybody wants to take part, they will need to join the official group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WNBR_Brisbane report abuse
