Matthew Mitcham’s Olympic medal dreams in the 3 metre springboard faded away this afternoon,
with the 20-year-old from Queensland dropping out after making it through to
the semi-finals.
But while Olympic jewellery eluded the diver today, nothing can take from
Mitcham the distinction of competing in the Olympics – and being the first out
gay Australian to do so.
He competes in the 10 metre platform on Friday.
On Monday, Mitcham made it into the semi-finals of the 3 metre springboard by a narrow
margin, coming 15th in the preliminaries. Today he finished 16th in a field of 18.
After taking a break from training in 2006, Mitcham stunned the
world by taking first place in the 10m platform FINA Diving Grand Prix in Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, in May.
Teammate Robert Newbery will compete in the springboard finals, which take place tonight.
