A Melbourne gay couple who reportedly ‘bought designer twin boys’ via a US surrogate mother says they’ve been the victim of a witch hunt.
Last month’s Sunday Herald Sun claimed the men used gender selection to ensure they had male children and paid up to $133,000 for the procedure.
The couple says the story is fraudulent and that the journalist responsible knew this.
Sunday Herald Sun reporter Liam Houlihan allegedly told the men he was writing a story on the controversial IVF procedure and embryo screening process known as Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis. The couple says they made it clear to Houlihan they didn’t use the method in question; and also that their children were not twins.
One of the two men said he and his partner were in a state of shock about Houlihan’s story. “Everything he wrote was wrong,” he said.
“I told [Houlihan] we did not have twins, we did not use gender selection and that we paid nowhere near $133,000. He also used a quote completely out of context. I refused to answer his questions and that’s when … he basically told me the story was going ahead regardless.”
The two men have been widely condemned as a result of the story and say they are concerned about the impact it may have on their children.
“We have been exposed to public disdain, which for the sake of our children we have always tried to avoid.”
The couple is seeking legal advice.
