Gay Catholics meet on Gold Coast PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Gay Catholics on the Gold Coast no longer have to drive to Brisbane to find fellowship. A new group, the Gold Coast Gay and Lesbian Catholic Group, has begun meeting on the third Wednesday of each month from 6pm.

“The inspiration stems from the gay Catholic movement, Acceptance, in Brisbane, but with the accent on being non-constituted and completely informal,” said Nelson, a spokesperson for the group.

The group meets in members’ homes but a local priest is prepared to offer Mass if required.

“All gay and lesbian adults living in and around Gold Coast City, be they young or mature, are more than welcome to participate without obligation.

“This should be of particular benefit to the younger community, offering them the opportunity many older, marginalised, ‘shame-ridden’ gay Catholics never had,” Nelson said.

Nonetheless, the group will remain “decidedly discreet … as history warns us of a homophobic, conservative element in the region”.

For further information, call Nelson on 0414 888 495 or 0420 570 680.
