Faker front man comes out PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Nathan Hudson, front man and founder of Sydney rockers Faker, has come out as gay ahead of the band’s performance at this year’s Mardi Gras Party on Saturday March 1.

“I’m happy to talk about it, for that kid who’s 15 and scared,” Hudson said of his decision to go public about his sexuality.

“My association with being gay was that it was bad and dark and not good for you. I had trouble finding people to look up to. I’m talking about this to be a bit freer.

“It’s something that shouldn’t matter and, on a lot of levels, it doesn’t – I hope the music we make transcends that. Still, it’s nice to be able to say this stuff,” he added.

Previously, Hudson had spoken publicly about his school days at a Catholic boys’ school in the rougher regions of Sydney’s Western Suburbs. Hudson told The Age he was called names because of his early interest in music and art.

“I actually stopped singing from year eight until year eleven, but then I had a realisation that the people around me were fuckwits and it was OK to like music and be creative. Kids can be cruel,” he said.
