‘Christmas’ gig aids kids at risk PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 June 2008

Homeless LGBT teens and those at risk of homelessness will benefit from a special Christmas in July event this month.

The supervised all-ages rock and DJ event will raise funds for ‘at risk’ young LGBTs who access counselling and support from Open Doors Youth Service.

Open Doors coordinator Lisa Thorpy told Queensland Pride that entry to the drug and alcohol-free event would be by donation of cash or new goods.

“The kids need things that all young people need when they are setting up their own home for the first time – toasters, sheets, towels etc.” Thorpy said.

She said Open Doors’ clients were often victims of abuse, harassment and violence, and some are homeless because they are gay and rejected by their parents.

Popular Pride Fair Day performers Fem Inc will play at the Christmas in July fundraiser.

“We wanted to do an all-ages show to support a youth service by helping to raise awareness and funds,” said Fem Inc drummer Pearl.

“Working with Open Doors promotes awareness and the needs of this marginalised group of kids.”

The band will also donate 10 percent of all t-shirt sales on the night to Open Doors.

Queensland Association for Healthy Communities has also supported the event by donating their warehouse space at 30 Helen Street, Newstead to host the fundraiser.

Christmas in July: the Spirit of Giving will be held at QAHC on Friday July 25 from 7 til 11pm.
