 Peter 'Westerly' Drouyn
A former world champion Australian surfer has revealed he is transitioning into a woman.
Peter Drouyn, 58, is one of the legends of the sport, having secured the world number one ranking in 1970 by a poll of international surfing experts.
The same year he won the Australian Open Surfing title and was named the Walter Lindrum Queensland Sportsman of the Year.
Drouyn, who has assumed the name ‘Westerly’, has revealed he always believed he was a woman trapped in a man’s body.
“I'm not afraid, I have nothing to fear,” Drouyn told Metro.co.uk.
“I have more a woman's emotional and physical make-up, except for one difference: I was born with a male appendage. It's that simple.”
Drouyn, who lives on Queensland’s Gold Coast, claims that over a period of eight years his male hormones have gradually “drained from his body and been replaced by female hormones”.
“It hasn't been intentional. It's totally natural, with no medication or hormone therapies, no enhancements and no advice. It's just happening.
“It's a strange phenomenon. This is all happening for a purpose,” he said.
However, the former star surfer who starred in The Odd Angry Shot and Drouyn the Movie says he plans to resurrect his acting career to fund gender reassignment surgery.
The “golden haired hero” is also credited as being the “first and only high profile surfer to star in Cleo magazine as a centerfold”.
In 1977, he founded the Stubbies Classic at Burleigh Heads, which created the judging format known as ‘Man on Man’ surfing.
In 1985 he introduced surfing to the Peoples Republic of China.
