Various (SONY BMG)
With all the attention this movie is receiving (Heath Ledger appears in
one of his final roles), it’s pleasing to hear that this soundtrack is
so damn fine.
More so, it’s a genius selection of remakes of some of Bob Dylan’s
best-known songs by some of the most exciting names in alternative
rock.
Imagine if you will, Eddie Veder doing the trademark ‘All Along the Watchtower’, Stephen Malkmus on ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’, Mason Jennings with ‘… Hattie Carroll’, Charlotte Gainsbourg casting magic with ‘Just Like a Woman’, The Black Key’s remaking ‘The Wicked Messenger’ or Jack Johnson with ‘Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind’.
It’s just too understated and sublimely perfect for my undeserving words.
But wait until you get to Antony & The Johnsons with ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’.
Then you’ll know you’ve really arrived.
