Billed as the world’s first gay slasher pic, Hellbent has also been hailed as a pointer to the future of gay cinema.
Sure enough, queering existing cinematic genres appears to be the new trend. Witness the likes of Another Gay Movie, a gay version of teen gross out comedies such as American Pie.
But just how queer is Hellbent? Instead of watching horny silicone-inflated cheerleaders and their horny dumb jock boyfriends getting sliced up in the woods, we witness the demise of a group of horny gay twinks at a West Hollywood Halloween party.
How do they die? Let's just say Hellbent’s buff, bare-chested and (literally) horny boogieman just loves "getting head".
As in almost all slasher pics, the one central character to survive is the one who doesn’t sleep around. Or rather, doesn't usually sleep around. It's so minor a distinction that Hellbent misses the opportunity to challenge the genre's traditional anti-sexual hypocrisy.
Perhaps in a truly queer slasher pic, the outrageous leather slut of the group would outwit the boogieman with sexual smarts whilst his vanilla-flavoured flatmates die hideous stomach-churning deaths at the fists… er… hands of the monster.
Despite co-production by Stephen J Wolfe, co-creator of Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, the film is light on suspense and low in budget. Nonetheless, fans of the genre should still find much to enjoy.
