Last month I made a trip to Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum to see the Princess Di exhibition they’re currently showing. It was a breathtaking show and a very emotional day.
For me, it was a moment to remember. I actually stood next to her wedding dress, and spent the whole day blubbing after seeing her most personal belongings. Thank God for waterproof mascara. No racoon eyes for me, luckily.
But seriously, a life so worthwhile gone to waste is a tragedy and whether the theories surrounding her death are true or not, I do believe that if the media hadn’t been hot on her heels that night she may have lived another day.
I’m sure we all love flicking through those gossip magazines to see which celebrity is sleeping with whom, or who is hooked on crack this week, but do they really need to go to the lengths they do just to get a story?
I know the pain of running from the media only too well. There’s no joy wearing out the heels on your Manolos just because you’ve been to McDonald’s and have had to bolt through the streets and into hiding.
Look at my poor girlfriend, Britney. Now you can’t tell me that in some way or another she hasn’t been provoked by the media and stirred by paparazzi into feeling like the complete nutter she’s supposed to be.
Do the paparazzi go too far? I’m sure it’s a competitive industry, but more competitive than looking glamorous and getting up on stage to entertain the troops? There’s always some new queen, younger though not always prettier, who is willing to take to the stage for a few dollars less.
Sure, the price of celebrity is the loss of some privacy, but where should the line be drawn? Personally, I ain’t gonna argue if someone wants to aim his telephoto through my bathroom window – well, not if he’s hot.
But at some point, when those blinds are closed, celebrities really do need their privacy.
I’m sure this is an issue that will never be resolved but just like everyone else, celebrities are humans and do deserve to be treated with the respect all humans deserve.
