Summer solace at Sirianni’s PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Finally, the rains have relented and Brisbane was doing its best to turn out a seasonally correct late summer scorcher on the Sunday morningdinepicsiriannis-250.jpg we sought out Sirianni’s Fine Foods in the Emporium complex, Fortitude Valley.

After a short stroll through the extensive and tempting deli-market, we arrive at Sirianni’s café, which faces onto the polished end of Ann Street.

The warm and muggy weather made us appreciate the air-conditioned ambience and the tall metallic tables and chairs inside. At nine o’clock, the cafe has a relaxed but lively vibe, with solo diners and groups of friends and families having their first coffees of the day.

Sirianni’s offers an all-day breakfast menu from 6.30 am, complete with all the old favourites – bacon and eggs, fruit toast with ricotta, and fruit salad with yoghurt.

We start with drinks – firstly, a ‘Zinger’, which is predominantly fresh pineapple juice, served icy cold and totally true to name. Next up is the coffee – perfectly adequate, the lattes hit the mark.

My breakfast companion chooses the pancakes, with glazed banana and a side of crisp bacon. The friendly waiter enthuses about the freshness and fluffiness of the pancakes, which my companion declares satisfying, but they are served with an embarrassing generosity of caramel sauce.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, so if you’d prefer to control your sweetness dosage, ask for the sauce to be served separately.

A good test of a new café is the eggs, and I can’t go past the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon on sour dough toast with a side of spinach. The eggs are poached to perfection and the salmon is coral pink and fresh – a delicious start to the day. The bread is fresh, and the barely-buttered sautéed spinach is a fine green friend to the salmon.

Other breakfast offerings included bruschetta with Persian fetta, cherry tomatoes, sun-dried tomato, basil & avocado, served on sourdough bread, and Sirianni’s omelette of the day.

Sirianni’s café presents a quality menu at very competitive prices. It delivers a great breakfast, with fast and friendly service in a buzzing local café. And as it’s right beside the deli-market, it’s the perfect opportunity to follow up  breakfast by stocking up on a few provisions for a spontaneous picnic in the park, enjoying nature’s air-con, the cooling power of trees.
