The Sunshine Coast and Cairns regions are revving up for the traditional post-Mardi Gras influx of visitors, with both areas putting on specialp8---shelter4-250.jpg events for the first week in March.

Cairns’ Sapphire Bar in Lake Street and other gay-friendly venues are running activities every night of the week, all of which are detailed in the ‘Post Mardi Gras Passport’. An initiative of local businesses and Queensland Association for Healthy Communities, the passport combines a guide to the local community, entertainment options and encouragement to practice safe sex.

The passport will be available throughout post-Mardi Gras week at QAHC, the Sapphire Bar and other gay-friendly venues, or by calling 4041 5451.
Sapphire Tapas Bar’s biggest event of the celebrations will be the White Party on March 8 from 8pm til late.

For further information, visit http://www.sapphiretapasbar.com.au/.

Meanwhile, on the Sunshine Coast, the post-Mardi Gras revelry is centred on the Northern part of the region around Noosa and Peregian.

Activities include a dance party at the Rolling Rock nightclub on March 4, a pool party at Horizons at Peregian on March 5, safari activities around the region on March 6, and a Poolside BBQ Breakfast at Horizons on March 7. Visit www.horizons-peregian.com for further details.

Queer films to tour Qld

Highlights from the Melbourne Queer Film Festival will be shown in several Queensland regional centres in April and May.

The Tropical Alternatives Film Festival will show three days of films in Cairns as well as back-to-back screenings of up to three movies, including features and shorts for gay men, lesbians and others.

The festival kicks off in Townsville on April 13, before visiting the Cooran on the Sunshine Coast on April 13, Cairns from April 18 to 20, Rockhampton on April 26, and the Gold Coast on May 3.

One film showing at all regional centres is Shelter, in which a young surfer is torn between family obligations and his own desires.

Starring Brad Rowe (Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss) and Trevor Wright, and directed by Jonah Markowitz, Shelter has picked up a swag of awards including Audience Awards for Best Film at the Seattle and Tampa Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals.
