A rarely seen psychedelic drug is gaining popularity on the scene in Queensland but 2C-E comes with high risks, warns youth affairs reporter Every generation seems to have its own drug of choice. The use of and demand for drugs is constant, but changing, with the ‘in drug’ often switching between ampethamines and drugs like cocaine and heroin every ten years or so. But for one range of drugs the demand never changes, only the supply – psychedelics. And the newest craze is 2C-E. 2C-E is 2,5-dimethoxy-4-ethyl-phenethylamine. It’s a relatively new drug on the scene but it’s gaining popularity. And even though its use is climbing, information about it is not. Some mates of mine have been taking it, so I wanted to find out more, but none of the people who should have been able to tell me had any information. Firstly, I contacted the Drug Info Line at Biala. “I’ve never heard of it,” was the response. Not only were they unable to give me any information, they hadn’t even heard of the drug, its effects or its use before. Queensland Injectors Health Network (QUIHN) was more helpful. Although unable to tell me anything about 2C-E, they gave me some information on 2C-B, a closely related, better known drug. So what the hell is it? I did my own research and found out it’s very closely related to the whole 2C family (2C-B, 2C-7, 2C-I, 2C-C) and related distantly to mescaline and MDMA. It’s an entirely chemical compound that has never been found in nature, made by Alexander Shulgin as a designer drug. You can eat or snort the fine white powder that generally comes in a clear capsule. Oral doses are usually 10 – 20mg, though if you’re going to snort it a lower dose of around 5mg is all that’s needed. 2C-E is very dose-sensitive. Effects start creeping on 10-20 minutes after taking it, and take up to two hours to reach full effect. First-time users of psychedelic drugs will most likely need a sitter (someone to watch you and make sure you don’t eat your hair wax or get lost in the mirror) and should always take a low dose in a comfortable, familiar setting with people they know and trust. 2C-E should be used with extreme caution; this is not a party pill and as with any drug you should never use it alone. The effects of 2C-E are typically pyschedelic, though it’s much stronger and way more intense than acid, mushies and 2C-B. Most users reported auditory hallucinations, like distortion of sound, echoing, flanging, scraping noises or music. Its body load (physical effect) is fairly easy; users may get fidgety or find themselves tensing muscles without knowledge. Patterns, colors and moving objects leaving trails are also typical. As with any psychedelic, 2C-E puts you into a very altered state of conciousness, though some users have said they had a relatively normal thought process while on 2C-E, which could lead you to believe you’re sober enough to do shit you shouldn’t … like drive. Do not drive; you’re not really playing Super Mario Kart. The average trip lasts between 8 and 17 hours, peaking for four to ten hours, so the potential for a bad trip is huge. Brain scatter and trip outs are typical for one to three days after the drug has worn off. 2C-E has a much higher chance of inducing HPPD (Hallucinogen Perception Persistant Disorder) at lower levels than acid. With all drug use, when something goes wrong, it can really go wrong, so if you choose to use make sure you inform yourself first.
