Passing pretties add to the Mix magic.dine-250.jpg

It’s Big Gay Day, a late summer Sunday early evening, and time to retreat from the hurly-burly to Mix Bar and Dining, at 320 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley.

We sit out in the back courtyard, enjoying the space from the throb of Valley traffic, but we are still well-placed to get sneak peaks of passing pretties, and sense the atmosphere of Brisbane’s mini-Mardi Gras excitement from down the street.

In fact, as the evening evolves, it gets a little noisy and boisterous but it’s great fun, with patrons and Mix staff enjoying the high energy of the weekend.

Mix Bar and Dining offers a modest menu of ten tapas, four mains and three pizzas. In this case, less is more, and it’s all good.

We start with glasses of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) – a crisp and clean white wine at $8.50 a glass.

We decide to share a few items from the tapas menu - standouts were the warm and zesty crumbed olives with aioli ($8), grilled haloumi and rocket salad ($10) and caramelised pork belly ($10).

All are very pleasing and devoured in no time. Next visit, I’ll check out the sand crab risotto atop button mushrooms with basil oil ($12).

More substantial tastes on the new menu include eye fillet served with cabernet jus on truffle mash ($15), and a rich mushroom ragout on a bed of waxy potatoes

Chef Brett Munro, formerly of Verve, has a fresh and easy style with food, and the menu will continue to evolve with his inspiration in the coming seasons.

Mix is popular for private functions, offering a generous space with a courtyard, dining area and bar.

Mix Bar and Dining is a friendly, relaxed oasis in the Valley, with fresh easy food and good-time service with style, led by bar manager Memet Bradford.

As the sun sets on another Big Gay Day in Brisvegas, our post-tapas cosmopolitans set the night ablaze.
