Hello Kitty
kitter-glitter-250.jpgGarrett Bithell chats to Ozan, a.k.a. Sydney drag queen-cum-DJ Kitty Glitter, ahead of her appearance at Fluffy Diva.

Gird your loins, Brisbane – notorious Sydney drag diva-cum-vinyl pusher Kitty Glitter is primed to hit Fluffy Diva at Family nightclub on February 10.

Kitty, the alter-ego of Ozan, was born out of a talent quest at the Albury Hotel ten years ago. At the time Ozan was living a bacchanalian existence working at infamous Sydney sauna Ken’s of Kensington. Prior to that he was touring Australia as a character performer for children, dressing up as Warner Bros, Disney and Hanna Barbera caricatures.

“I somehow thought that by doing the competition the other drag queens would recognise potential and give me work but that didn’t happen,” Ozan tells Queensland Pride. “So I began to work by myself.”

Soon after, Kitty landed a regular gig at the Civic Hotel in Sydney’s CBD, hosting her own show every Saturday night. “It was a gay-friendly crowd and I often said the only reason I started doing drag was because I’d already fucked all the gay men I wanted to and now it was the straight boys’ turn,” he once said.

In 2003, Kitty and fellow drag queen Penny Tration travelled to Cyprus on a six-month contract. “It was the best experience ever,” Ozan remembers. “It was great not thinking about looking for work and living in a resort. I only worked two hours a night so I had all day at the beach.”

When Ozan returned to Sydney he managed to get Kitty’s shiny platform-shoed foot in the door and she was finally cast in a drag production show. Her career has only snowballed since then, and in 2006 she was named Sydney’s Favourite Drag Queen at the 2006 Drag Industry Variety Awards. Kitty now performs four nights a week all around Sydney.

“I know some other drag queens who are struggling at the moment but I’m fully booked,” Ozan says. “I can’t fit anything else in.”
Like a true multi-tasking madam, the last year saw Kitty hone her skills behind the decks as a DJ, further diversifying her appeal.

Word spread like wild fire and she has already featured at Homesexual and last year’s Sleaze Ball, winning the DIVA for Most Popular DJ.

Which brings us to Kitty’s upcoming appearance at Fluffy Diva. What can the mighty punters expect?

“Mainly uplifting vocal house with a few surprise camp tracks thrown in for camp measure,” Ozan muses. “Hands in the air and lots of hip shaking and butt bouncing and sweaty action!”

On the flip side, Kitty is expecting a “pumping room and great energy”, so Brisvegas better not disappoint.

However, don’t expect to meet Ozan on the night – all you’re going to get is pure Kitty.

Ozan and Kitty live very distinct, separate lives and ne’er the twain shall meet. “I become a drag queen on Thursday and I’m a drag queen until Sunday,” Ozan states. “Come Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I don’t want to be near it.

“It takes over your life as it is, because there’s just so much you’ve got to do to maintain being a drag queen – shaving your body hair and staying trim.

“You’re kind of torn between two worlds – you’re a man half the week and a woman the other half.

“If I’m hooking up with someone off Gaydar and they ask me what I do, I tell them after I have sex with them. I don’t want them to feel like they’re having sex with a girl. I don’t think I’m very feminine out of drag so I don’t like to give that away.

“I have a deep-down desire to be a big, hairy muscle-man, but that’s not going to happen at the moment! Hopefully one day.

“Maybe if I go hard for the next few years I can retire happily, get hairy, get muscly and bulk-up!”

And what’s the most memorable part of being a drag queen?

“All the sexy boys you get to pick up,” Ozan says. “That’s always memorable!”

Gents, don’t say you haven’t been warned. Kitty is on the prowl.
