The erotic illustration of Josman gives art appreciation new meaning, writes Barry Lowe.
Hands up all those who have wanked (that’s jerked off for American readers) to a hot illustration or comic? You might like to put your hand down now if you’re sitting alone in a crowded bar. Of course, until the advent of photography our forebears would have used the written word, dirty talk or paintings on cave walls, clay tablets or papyrus to fuel fantasies. Now we have the net.
Perhaps because they can go to fantasy lands way outside the realm of the more realistic media of photography or video, I often find comics and porn illustrations far more erotic. If you think that’s perverse then I should admit that I used to get turned on by Robbie Sinclair, the son in the television series Dinosaurs. I love the works of Tom of Finland, Etienne, and Patrick Fillion to name but a few. I love gay comics, from Harry Chess through to the smutty adventures of The Hun. I even turned my own hand to comic strip writing on Bimbo Beach with wonderful illustrations by John Dobie.
But one of my all-time favourite erotic artists is Josman (and I’ll be writing about others here in future) whose work I first discovered in HandJobs, a magazine devoted to daddies and their boys. A self-taught artist who treated his illustrations as a hobby, he debuted a risqué web comic in 2002 and the result was immediate: job offers and fan mail poured in and enabled to give up his day job to concentrate on illustrating full-time. And one of the markets was the aforementioned HandJobs.
His love of art developed from an interest in superhero comics and later from his discovery of Tom of Finland: “Drawing naked men was my main wank material in my teen years, so it was a natural progression for me, I guess,” he revealed in a 2006 interview.
While he’s attracted to “tall, beefy muscular guys” of the kind who people his erotic illustrations “big cocks are a bonus and not an essential requirement”, although he readily admits his fantasy turn-on is twins. “I mean, come on, who wouldn't like to watch a pair of gorgeous twins getting it on with each other and then joining in for a threesome? That's my idea of homo heaven!”
Does he ever get turned on by his own creations? He readily admits that during his first effort, “I was wanking all the time, and it took me a long time to complete the story. These days I'm trying to be a little more professional in my approach to creating comics. If I get a hard-on while drawing, I just leave it alone.” Probably a good idea considering a five-page comic takes him 10 to 14 days.
Now, over a dozen of his fabled explicit daddy comics are in book form, titled simply Josman, and there’s enough fantasy fodder to keep you stroking for months. And, yes, there’s a twins comic included. As well, the book contains a number of short erotic stories with his illustrations: ‘Learning to Breed’ is a classic. And what makes Josman so refreshing, he’s an equal opportunity pornographer: his men range across all ages, body shapes and ethnicities.
His personal philosophy is “Don’t take life too seriously. Your time on this planet is way too short, so smile and enjoy every moment.” It shows in his incredible art works.
